Nun Pleads in Sex Abuse Case

Well, here’s a new one. A Roman Catholic nun in Illinios pleaded no contest to multiple counts of indecent behavior with a child, for her role in hundreds of sexual encounters with two males in the 1960′s.

The two men are now adults and have told authorities of the incidents that took place when one of them was 13 years old, and the other man said it started when he was in seventh grade. One man said he had between 60 and 80 encounters including sexual intercourse, while the other said he had over 100 instances, also including sexual intercourse.

The nun received counseling when the church “learned of the situation” in the 1990′s, and is now retired. She is now 79 years old and faces up to 10 years for each count. She will be sentenced on Feb. 1.

Now, we’ve all heard of the priests molesting the boys, but you don’t hear an awful lot about the nuns getting involved. Once again, the alarming part of the story isn’t necessarily the abuse (alarming as it may be), but the fact that the church found out about it and gave the nun counseling instead of turning the matter over to the authorities as they should have. Abusive clergy will never stop as long as there is no accountability outside of the church. Counseling and relocation is simply giving a free ride to a criminal. It’s about time these churches are made to pay for the crimes they cover up. These are institutions that are repeatedly covering up crimes that occur often on their property, by their clergy, and they don’t contact the proper people. The lack of accountability is appalling, as is the arrogance of putting the church above the law.
